Just Some Thoughts.

If someone told me 10 years ago that I'd be living in the North in my 30's, I would have laughed long and hard while I was packing up my car in South Carolina.  I never had ANY thought of moving North. They talk funny and are aggressive.

If someone told me as little as 4 years ago that I'd be living in Brooklyn with a guy I had a huge crush on and just finished a great date with in Los Angeles, I'd say, "marriage and BROOKLYN?! Yeah Right!"

If someone told me as little as one year ago that I'd be moving out of PhilaDEATHia and living in Brooklyn with my amazing husband and would be pregnant, I'd quite literally spit out my drink.

But, here we are.

I, at times have little panic attacks about what we are about to do. Raising a child in Brooklyn just sounds so funny to me. Don't get me wrong, its a fantastic place... lots to do, lots of people and stimulation and culture, but, to raise a baby? Are we crazy? I guess we'll find out.

I admit, while nervous, I'm also very excited to raise my baby in such a multi-cultural, eclectic and exciting place. Where else can a baby/toddler see so much on one block? There are colors everywhere, albeit spray paint. There is a park right near us with lots of kids playing and lovely places to lay a blanket down for a picnic. The daycare we're PRAYING to get into has baby yoga, art and music time for infants. I'm a little jealous of our little tykes growing and expanding mind within this city.

Will we live here forever? Probably not, but while we're here I plan on showing my little mini-me a world that many never get to experience. I'll just have to leave before it starts to get that terrible accent. :)

We find out the sex on Tuesday. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO excited.

GOing GOing Gone in Chocolate City

The DofC is not known for much, Half Smokes, Duke Ellington, This Album that is good and you should listen to. But DC's biggest claim to fame has to be GO-GO, and the father of GO-GO was Chuck Brown, who died yesterday.

FANtastic?

Tadao Cern uses a fan and a camera to create some bizarre portraits.

My Morning.

I was walking to the subway this morning and a man sitting on his stoop in Brooklyn says, "hello! I hope you have a great day!". Now, this doesn't happen much (to me at least) in the North, so I was really grateful for the greeting and well wishes. Today is going to be a great day, I thought!  I wished him a happy day too and as I was going down the stairs to the station I saw a massive human turd in the corner of the stairs. Quickly brought back the reality of living in NYC.

As I was waiting for the train to come and trying to erase the nastiness in the stair corner, a horn started playing "Sweet Caroline". Not well, but, it was the cheerful song and people were smiling and enjoying the melody.  I honest to God thought, only in New York can you experience so much in seconds.

I got on the train, it was packed, but not too packed. The AC was on and it was a quiet peaceful ride into Manhattan. Then... the train suddenly stopped and had a quick jolt. We were near the station but not completely in so the doors couldn't open. We were stuck for quite a bit of time. The AC went out and the lights turned off and a voice came on the loud speaker with directions to walk through the trains to the open door on the 5th car. Everyone followed directions calmly. We exit and there are men with flashlights looking under the train and another saying, "do not say anything, do not say anything".

It was a jumper. So sad. So gross and I was so late for work.

A man yells, "jump off a bridge, don't ruin my day, jerk". As if the guy smashed under the train could hear him.

Only. In. New York.

Besides that, I love it.

How was your morning?

The Lumineers

So, Carrie and Scott saw the Lumineers play a little while ago and from the sounds of it both really enjoyed the set. Scott sent me some links and their tunes have been playing an awful lot around here lately. Today while looking at the NPR Fresh Air tumblr - it's great bookmark it - I saw this lovely video from a recent KEXP session. Thought it would be just the thing for a Thursday afternoon.
